Daniel Ricciardo criticized
Lance Stroll after the incident during the 2024
Chinese Grand Prix, which resulted in his retirement.
Daniel Ricciardo struggled in the first four opening races of the 2024 season but got a new chassis coming into the race at
Shanghai International Circuit and was ready to show what he's got.
He managed to
outqualify his teammate and then had a great start to the race, climbing from P12 to P9 by lap 25. However, during the safety car restart at the end of lap 26, everything went wrong for the Honey Badger.
As multiple drivers bunched up under, breaking into turn number 14, he was heavily hit from behind by Lance Stroll, who didn't slow down his vehicle in time.
The collision badly damaged Ricciardo's diffuser and floor. Once the race restarted, the
RB driver had no pace and
had to retire his car.
The Canadian
Aston Martin driver refused to take the blame for the incident on his team radio as he called drivers in front "idiots."
Hearing this reaction from Stroll ignited the Australian driver, who was on his way to scoring valuable points for RB but couldn't finish the race because of the 25-year-old. As quoted by Autosport, he said after the race:
"I'd slowly started to calm down, and then I was told what Lance thinks of the incident. Apparently, I'm an idiot, and it was my fault. That made my blood boil, because it's clear as day and it's also behind a safety car."
The Honey Badger explained he watched the onboard of the Aston Martin driver, who wasn't looking with his hand at his car but rather at the apex of the corner.
"The only thing you've got to do is watch the car in front. We can't predict what the leader's gonna do. The race doesn't start until the control line."
"I'm doing my best not to say what I want to say, but f*** that guy. And I'm being nice, too! But if that's what he thinks..."
