Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve said he believes
Fernando Alonso wants the second seat in
Mercedes, which is set to be empty after 2024.
One of the proposed options that Mercedes is understood to be considering is Fernando Alonso, who is currently driving for Aston Martin.
The 42-year-old is aware of his unique situation in the driver market, but he said his priority would be to speak to his current team first.
On the other hand, Jacques Villeneuve believes he wants a seat on the German team. He told
GP Fans:
"Then there's Alonso. Alonso wants that Mercedes seat."But Mercedes does not necessarily have to be the only option for the double World Champion. When asked whether
Max Verstappen would want Alonso as his teammate in
Red Bull, Villeneuve responded:
"He probably would, but why would Alonso go into the Verstappen team? It's much better to go into a team like Mercedes that doesn't have a full-on leader yet - one that is not settled in stone."
This interview has obviously been conducted ahead of the speculations that have arisen over the last two days,
but Verstappen is currently the one who is rumored to take the seat in Mercedes for the 2025 season.
Nevertheless, if Verstappen stayed with the team from Milton Keynes, it probably would make more sense for Alonso to choose Mercedes. Moreover,
Christian Horner already
dismissed the option of having "two alphas" in one team. Villeneuve added:
"He's driving a Mercedes engine already for another year at least. So does that mean we will see a very nice Alonso like last year towards his teammate and play the game? Or will he just think 'Alonso' like he's done in the past? So that will be interesting to see as well.
