Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft revealed he had a conversation with the retiring team principal,
Franz Tost, who suggested two of the 20 drivers should not be on the F1 grid.
It is a dream of almost every single racing driver to race in Formula One. However, out of the thousands of drivers, only 20 can be on the F1 grid at the same time.
Some would give everything to even be able to test drive an F1 car, not to mention being a part of the team for 22 full Grand Prix weekends of the season.
There are quite a few young, talented F2 drivers every single year waiting to get a chance in F1, and not many do. It is, therefore, always disputed whether a certain new driver who enters the sport really deserves his seat over others who could have got the chance.
Sky Sports commentator David Croft recently revealed he had a talk with the retiring former
AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost who worked with countless young drivers over his years in F1. Crofty said latest Sky F1 podcast episode:
"I had a fabulous exchange with him in the paddock at a race. We were just talking in general, sometimes you could get Franz when he had five or 10 minutes and just chew the cud of Formula 1, and we were talking about drivers."
Apparently, Tost believed every single driver who was part of the F1 grid during the last race of the season deserved his seat except for two drivers.
"He said, ‘Yeah, every single driver in this paddock deserves to be in this paddock, deserves to be in Formula 1.. except two."
The commentator would not reveal who the two drivers were and left it to the imagination of Formula One fans, but said he agreed with the former team principal stated.
"I said ‘Really? Two? And who would they be? He said, blah, blah, blah, and blah, blah, bla. I’m not going to name them, but I could not disagree with a word he said about that one."
Usually, a driver's qualities can be determined based on a direct comparison between him and his teammate,
and there were a few who underperformed severely during the 2023 season. Croft added:
"And he then went on to explain absolutely why they really shouldn’t be in Formula 1 at the moment. But I’m not going to tell you who because that will be unfair of those drivers."
