Former F1 driver Jaime Alguersuari suggested
Fernando Alonso might yet again become a future world Champion if the latest rumors are true.
Ever since Red Bull announced their separation from their star engineer, Adrian Newey, almost every team on the grid has been trying to sign the 65-year-old.
Newey is the most successful car designer in Formula 1 history, and he is largely credited with Red Bull's success in 2010-2013 and in recent years.
Consequently, whichever team manages to convince the Briton to sign with them might have a crucial advantage in the new regulations in 2026.
Rumors that emerged last week suggested that
Aston Martin has made some big moves to sign Newey and that the deal was very close, if not already done.
If that was the case, and Adrian Newey went to join Aston Martin after the start of the 2025 season, Jaime Alguersuari suggests Fernando Alonso's fortune might change. He told Marca:
"Fernando can be once again a world champion. These are the best news that the Spanish driver received in the last ten years of his career:
Aston Martin made great progress at the start of the 2023 season but has only been falling back down the order since then.
The 42-year-old went from scoring podiums on a regular basis last year to occasionally finishing inside the top ten in the first part of 2024.
Aston Martin seems to need someone with experience who understands the regulations and how to design a car. Newey could be that person.
The 2026 season (when the regulations change) is approaching very fast, and Alguersuari reckons Newey is the number one person who can help Aston Martin build a championship-contending car.
"Number one by far is Adrian Newey. And there is no one better than him to understand this change in the cycle that is going to come to racing. The entire Formula 1 competes against Newey."
