Current F2 driver and future Haas F1 driver Ollie Bearman shared the priceless advice he received from Charles Leclerc ahead of his F1 Grand Prix debut.
Oliver Bearman is competing in F2 this season, but you might remember how he was unexpectedly called into F1 for one Grand Prix as a substitute for Carlos Sainz, who had to undergo urgent surgery.
That weekend (2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix) was a significant success for the British youngster. On the one hand, the final finishing position- P7, might not impress everyone, considering Ferrari was the second fastest car at the time.
However, if you also consider the circumstances under which the 19-year-old was put into that car—with very short notice and almost zero preparation—his performance was incredible—according to everyone who had a proper insight into that situation.
The future Haas F1 driver recently appeared on the High-Performance Podcast, where he was asked what Charles Leclerc was like during his debut weekend in Jeddah, and he said:
"He was super helpful. First of all, I think he said congratulations and was, of course, happy for me. But, the thing I remember that he helped me with was before the race, we sat down with him and also Fred [Vasseur] and he was helping me a little bit."
There were multiple enormous challenges Bearman would have to face that weekend, and one of them was having no experience in long-run stints. Consequently, all the advice he could get from Leclerc was "priceless" to him, as he explained:
I hadn't done any long runs, so I hadn't done more than two pushes in a row before doing the race. So, it's a bit of a different scenario driving in the race and the qualifying and he gave me a bit of insight about the tyre behaviour and stuff like that, stuff that I hadn't experienced yet."
"It's a little detail, but it's super helpful, and it's something that I didn't get to experience in my one Free Practice session. These small little tips and insights were priceless to me in the situation I was in."
