Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso made a big prediction about the Scuderia Ferrari F1 team as he spoke to the media after the 15th round of the 2024 season.
Ferrari has not been doing exceptionally well in the last couple of races preceding the Dutch Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc managed to bring home a P3 in Belgium.
However, other than that, the Italian F1 team struggled with form compared to top teams like Mercedes, Red Bull, and (currently fastest) McLaren. In Zandvoort, Leclerc brought home another P3 result.
This came as a huge relief to the team from Maranello, which qualified only in P6 and P11. The problem was that not even Ferrari knew where their race day performance came from.
With the Italian team seeming a bit lost, the prediction made by the double World Champion might come as a surprise. Fernando Alonso suggested that Scuderia is going to be the team to beat in the next few races.
“"I think the top four teams, maybe Mercedes, are a little bit up and down, but McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari, they are podium contenders every weekend."”
“"The next two races [not including the Azerbaijan Grand Prix between them], for example, Ferrari should be the car to beat." ”
“"What we saw last year in Monza and Singapore, Leclerc's win in Monaco this year, for Singapore, I think they will be the favorites."”
Ferrari wasn't particularly competitive in 2023, but its performance suddenly picked up when it came to its home race at Monza.
Red Bull's team principal, Christian Horner, hinted back then that he wouldn't be surprised if the team deliberately turned up their engines to score big on home soil. If that was the case, Ferrari might be competing for victory this week at Monza Circuit.
Street circuits like Singapore also tend to suit Ferrari well. In 2023, the Singapore Grand Prix was the only race that was not won by Red Bull Racing—Carlos Sainz crossed the finish line first. Could we see such an unexpected uptick in Ferrari's performance in 2024 as well?
