Martin Brundle pointed out how
Fernando Alonso caused costly damage during the 2024 Australian Grand Prix weekend for a team that could be on his wish list.
With his current contract expiring at the end of the 2024 season, the 42-year-old Spanish Matador might be looking to sign probably his last-ever contract in F1, although it is never sure with the Spanish Matador.
This time around, however, Alonso finds himself in an interesting spot. It seems that a couple of the top teams on this grid might be interested in his services.
However, the team principal of Silver Arrows also mentioned Alonso on his candidate list. What the double World Champion might not have wanted to do under these circumstances is cause damage to his possible future team.
Yet, he got involved in an incident with George Russell in Australia, which resulted in the destruction of the 25-year-old's W15. Brundle wrote in his column for Sky Sports:
"Alonso popped his saintly halo on and went to see the Race Stewards, explaining how he intended to approach turn six differently for a better exit speed which included decelerating 100 metres earlier, brushing the brake, and even a downshift."
"This is what caught Russell out. We've seen Alonso do that before in Nurburgring in 2003 against David Coulthard, and he had exactly the same playbook."
The incident was quite controversial because there was no contact between the two cars,
but Alonso still received a 20-second penalty in the end.
Nevertheless, Brunle pointed out the Spaniard might be a bit more worried about the damage he caused (if we assume he is the one to blame) to his potential future team.
"Except this time, it caused a huge amount of costly damage for a team who could well be on his wish list."
