Former F1 driver and current Aston Martin brand ambassador Pedro de la Rosa revealed that Fernando Alonso and his team now have an "interesting project on the table."
Fernando Alonso's contract extension with Aston Martin was announced on April 11, 2024. The 42-year-old signed a "multi-year" deal with the British team that is supposed to take him through to at least 2026.
The Spanish Matador was one of the biggest names on the driver market, and it was heavily speculated that he was close to signing contracts with Mercedes and Red Bull.
Even Alonso admitted he was in talks with multiple teams. However, he suggested he felt the most serious of them was Aston Martin.
His friend and Aston Martin brand ambassador Pedro de la Rosa suggested on the F1 Nation podcast that the real question wasn't where the Spaniard would continue but whether he wanted to continue at all.

"The only question that he had to answer to himself is: 'Do I want to continue in F1 and show this level of commitment?' That was the question and once it was answered, I think the deal happened very fast."

It was revealed that Alonso decided he wanted to continue sometime around the Australian Grand Prix. He previously promisedto first talk to Aston Martin, and he did.
Aston Martin is on the list of teams that could potentially challenge for the Championship after the change of regulations in 2026.
De la Rosa revealed that one reason the British team and Alonso quickly announced the contract extension was that they had an "interesting project on the table."

"The reason that the fact that the team and Fernando wanted to communicate this so fast was mainly because we have an interesting project on the table. Why should we hide it from the world?"
