Williams driver
Alex Albon explained why his performance looked less consistent than it was in reality throughout the 2023 season.
Williams team amassed a total of 28 points in the Constructors' Championship throughout the 2023 season, which, in the end, was just enough for seventh place.
From the eyes of casual F1 fans, it might have seemed like William's performances were always up and down and that the team got lucky achieving points on a few occasions, but Alex Albon recently explained that is not the case. As quoted by Motorsport.com, he said:
"It's strange, because a lot of people think we're very inconsistent, but I personally think the execution of each weekend has been very consistent."
The problem with Williams was that the team did not have enough resources to build a fully competitive car that would allow drivers to consistently finish in the point positions.
Consequently, it has been a trend for the team to build a car that is suited for low-downforce circuits like
Monza or
Vegas, where it could perform well so it can at least achieve some points rather than trying to build a car for every track and failing everywhere.
"The car itself is quite inconsistent. So we know, Monza, Vegas tracks go well, for us. We know cold tracks do well for us. We know what tracks don't work for us, we windy tracks don't work for us, tight tracks don't work for us."
Albon admitted Williams car is not consistent saying the plan for upcoming years is to improve this issue. However, the 27-year-old asserted he and his team maximized the car's potential at every single race.
"Our car does have its moments and one of our biggest focuses next year is to stop these weaknesses in our car. But the execution has been very strong, I think, and we made the most of opportunities."
The Williams driver suggested consistency has been the key differentiating factor that allowed his team to score seventh place in the Championship. He added:
"So that's why I believe we've been able to actually get P7, I think. When we've had the car to do it, we've made sure we've scored the points. I think others have either had a blunder with strategy or whatever it may have been, just to miss out on points."
