Max Verstappen shared what he told George Russell right after the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix to lift his mood, as the Mercedes driver was clearly disappointed.
Despite the fact that the triple World Champion didn't have the dominant car at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve during the ninth round of the 2024 season, he still managed to snatch the victory for his team.
The Canadian Grand Prix was a great showcase of Verstappen's talent, skill, and consistency, combined with Red Bull's flawless execution. The Dutchman really had a reason to celebrate after crossing the finish line.
George Russell, on the other hand, came into the race thinking he might have the fastest car that weekend, and starting from the pole, he was in prime position to score his career's second victory.
However, in the end, the 26-year-old Mercedes driver only crossed the finish line in P3 and it was obvious he wasn't happy, even though it was his team's best Grand Prix result of the season so far. Verstappen shared with Sky Sports what he told Russell:
"George was a bit upset with himself, and I said: 'Mate, these things can happen. We are all pushing to the limit, sometimes it works out, and sometimes you make one mistake too many, and it can catch you out.'"
"But that's racing, I'm sure he will learn and look back at it. We're all still very young, you have a lot to learn."
Russell drives for one of the best teams on the grid, but in his career, he wasn't nearly as often in a position to win the race as Verstappen, and he perhaps still has a lot to learn in that aspect.
In Canada, he made three significant mistakes that cost him a lot of time and valuable track position; if he hadn't, chances are he could have really won the race.
Nevertheless, there are still 15 race weekends left in this season, and Silver Arrows seem to have caught up with the top three teams, so the 26-year-old Briton will most probably get a few more chances to get that win.
