Max Verstappen is in the pole position to win the 2024 World Drivers' Championship, but he mast remain perfect to do so, according to Guenther Steiner.
The Dutch driver will enter the second part of the season, after the summer break, with a 78-point lead over his closest rival and good friend, Lando Norris, in McLaren.
The are others who may join the title fight, who are close behind Norris, but given the performances in 2024 so far, it seems it will come down to either of the two.
Still, the Red Bull Racing driver is far ahead of his closest competitor, which makes him the favorite to win the title. However, according to former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner, who spoke to GPBlog, the Dutch driver can not afford to make mistakes, especially given the team's recent struggles.
“"He's got the biggest chance, but he can make no mistake. If he makes a few mistakes, he's under pressure. I think Lando can still get close to him if McLaren stop making [mistakes]."”
“"And this is not a criticism of McLaren. I think they're doing a fantastic job. But if they believe in themselves, they can win every race, because you need to learn to win as well."”
According to the 59-year-old, Norris can challenge the three-time World Champion for the title this year, but to do so, he needs to remain very consistent, which he has struggled with so far this ysar.
“"Winning is difficult, even if you're a good car, but consistent winning is very difficult. So if they can take that little step up and win consistently... That they are not afraid of themselves, then I think Lando can challenge Max."”
Still, if Verstappen remains as solid as he has been during the 2024 season, there isn't much that Norris can do if the Dutch driver remains so consistent.
“"If Max is solid and never makes mistakes, sometimes happy with the podium instead of the win, he has got a good advantage. As much as I like him, and he knows that, he needs to be careful."”
