Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher suggested that the four-time World Champion
Sebastian Vettel is keen on driving again.
Sebastian Vettel retired at the end of the 2022 season after 15 years of career in F1, during which he won four-driver Championship titles with Red Bull Racing.
He has previously said he stood by his decision to stay out of F1. However, his name has been mentioned more and more in recent weeks in relation to the second seat in
Mercedes.
Lewis Hamilton will leave the German team at the end of 2024, and there aren't too many drivers with the same wealth of experience as the seven-time World Champion.
In fact, there are probably only two drivers in terms of experience:
Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel. While many discount the four-time World Champion because he is retired, a recent update from Ralf Schumacher suggests Vettel might be interested in a comeback. Schumacher told Sky Germany:
"I heard that Sebastian Vettel wants to drive a car again. Of course, you have to close a gap now. You saw what happened on the stock market after Lewis Hamilton moved to Ferrari, that triggered something."
Vettel and Hamilton used to be great rivals during 2017 and 2018. But back then, their roles were reversed to what they would be if Vettel made the miracle comeback to Mercedes.
Vettel used to drive for Ferrari, and now he would be with Silver Arrows, while Hamilton used to go for the German team, and now he would be with the Red.
However, by 2025, it will be two seasons that the 36-year-old will have been out of an F1 car, and it remains a question whether he would be able to match the speed of
George Russell or Alonso, who is the other potential replacement.
Could you imagine the German driver in a Mercedes? It would undoubtedly be yet another unbelievable story, just like Hamilton going to Ferrari.
