Carlos Sainz revealed what he and Sergio Perez told each other while "awkwardly sat" in the medical room after the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix Collision.
Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez didn't finish the 17th round of the 2024 season in Baku and scored zero points after crashing into each other on the penultimate lap of the race.
Both drivers' initial reactions on their team radios showed huge frustration, but the two had some time to talk everything through as they went together for a medical check right after the incident.
Speaking to the media ahead of the following race in Singapore, Carlos Sainz revealed what was said between him and the Red Bull Racing F1 driver:
"We were awkwardly sat next to each other for 20 minutes in the medical centre, both with a heart rate monitor and controlling our vitals. We were looking at each other and saying: 'Mate, what the f**k happened there?"
"And we were like, 'I don't know. But I promise I didn't do anything bad to you, Checo. I didn't close you off. I didn't do anything.' We were having this dialogue and trying to analyze what happened."
Ultimately, neither of the two drivers received a penalty as FIA ruled their collision was a racing incident and noted that both could have done more to avoid the crash.
The most frustrating thing for both drivers was that they could have finished on the podium and scored big points to help their teams in the Championship, but they ended up with nothing. Sainz added:
"And suddenly, after these 20 minutes, we were like: this sport is so s**t sometimes. How can we be here and missing out on the podium? We had the podium."
"Charles was dying on his Hard tires out there. We were probably both going to have a go at him. And we were both sitting there like, 'How on earth did we manage to not finish in the podium?"
"It was a podium coming – and in the end we kind of joked about it, so no hard feelings with each other."
