Pirelli Head of Motorsport Mario Isola recently spoke about developing new Pirelli tires, which are supposed to improve racing.

It was recently confirmed Pirelli would remain F1 exclusive tire supplier until 2027. Producing tires for Formula One cars is not an easy task as the tire has to meet multiple requirements, which often go against each other.

One of the most common complaints in relation to tires in 2023 has been that they overheat too quickly when drivers try to follow cars in front of them.

Overheating tires degrade faster, which then puts drivers at a disadvantage. On one hand, it adds a strategic element to the race. On the other hand, some say it decreases the number of overtakes.

Pirelli Head of Motorsport Mario Isola raised a valid point recently, pointing out that F1 fans want more pit stops in the race, but less degrading tires would cause the opposite. He told the media:

"Without high degradation, there is no reason to target two-stop races. I believe that most of the action on track was due to tire degradation and how you are able to manage tire degradation."

Some teams struggle with degradation more than others. While Red Bull and Mercedes do pretty well in general, teams like Ferrari and Haas suffer as they lose pace because of degrading tires. Isola added:

"If you reduce that, and we are going to run a specific analysis on that in the next weeks, I am convinced that the risk is to have a train of cars."

It seems like producing tires for F1 is a job in which you can never satisfy everybody. However, Isola said Pirelli is currently analyzing the problem to address the complaints.

"[But] I understand that drivers who are complaining about high tire degradation [are doing] because they would like to push more."
