Sergio Perez shared an amusing response on his social media following rumors about his potential F1 retirement at the 2024 Mexico Grand Prix.
Red Bull seriously considered replacing Sergio Perez at the start of the summer break—
four Grand Prix weekends ago. It seemed like a done deal for a second, but the Austrian team then
suddenly decided to
keep the Mexican driver.
F1 news outlet
F1 Insider reported that the team from Milton Keynes made this decision after
being approached by Liberty Media, in whose interest it is that Perez makes it at least to the
Mexico City Grand Prix.
Red Bull's motorsport advisor
Helmut Marko later asserted that Red Bull Racing made its decision
independently but
didn't deny the speculations suggesting the owner of F1 really approached them.
The Austrian team kept Perez, saying the next couple of race weekends would be critical for his future. Since then, the 34-year-old driver's results have been P6, P8, DNF, and P10.
Although the Mexican driver showed
potential during the 2024
Azerbaijan Grand Prix, he still
hasn't delivered the results that
his team needs, and with his recent comments, it seemed like Perez was preparing his fans for a retirement announcement. He told
DAZN:
Sergio Perez, after finishing tenth in Singapore
"I want to end my career when I want to and not when someone tells me. That's the most important thing, getting to the point where I can decide my future."
"For now, I have a two-year contract. Two years is a long time, but I know the end is coming closer and closer. I don't see myself racing here like Fernando. I admire him for everything he does at his age."
"With 24 races a year, the calendar is long, but I will be there for at least two more years. However, I don't see myself in Formula 1 for much longer."
Following the 2024
Singapore Grand Prix, F1 journalist
Joe Saward reported that paddock rumors suggested Red Bull and Sergio Perez
planned a retirement announcement for the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix.
"One interesting rumor in Singapore was that Perez and Red Bull have worked out a plan that will see him announce his retirement in Mexico, giving him a more gentle exit than being fired and will be less painful for Red Bull sales in the Americas. This would give Red Bull the chance to shop around for a new driver in 2025."
While this theory seemed plausible, Sergio Perez quite quickly shut down all the rumors on X (formerly Twitter), where he posted a scene from the movie Wolff of Wallsteet, where the main character shouted: "I'm nor f****** leaving!" See the post below:
