McLaren F1 driver Lando Norris commented on his result after the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Lando Norris found himself in a very unlucky situation during the qualifying session on Saturday as he was caught out by yellow flags during his final flying lap of Q1.
Consequently, his lap was not good enough to make it into further parts of qualifying, and he had to start the race on Sunday from the seventeenth place on the grid.
The McLaren driver started the race on soft tires, trying to get as far as he could before pitting for the second stint on hard compound tires.
Norris was in unbelievable eighth place by lap 32. It happened on that lap that Kevin Magnussen crashed his Haas, causing red flags and consequent race restart.
The McLaren driver moved to the 10th place before the restart and lost four more positions after it as he got squeezed between two cars on the way to the first corner.
However, the 23-year-old did not give up, and with an incredible pace on his medium compound tires, he managed to fight his way up to cross the line in the final P5. Norris told the media after the race:
"A very good race. Our pace was excellent from start to finish. The different strategy worked perfectly. A great day for us, probably one of our best Sundays in terms of race pace, overtaking and race management.
The McLaren team principal, Andrea Stella said it was one of the best races he has ever been part of. Norris added he just wanted to get the most out of the race.
"We moved on from yesterday and made the most of it. I’m very happy with the team and how I drove today."
After being asked what he thinks would have been possible to achieve after a better qualification, Norris responded, saying: "I would have finished on the podium."
