Charles Leclerc discussed how he feels about Ferrari's position compared to Red Bull's three races after introducing their first significant upgrade package.
Scuderia Ferrari F1 team introduced its biggest upgrade package of the 2024 season so far on the home soil during the 2024 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola.
As Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz said, they could immediately feel the progress. The Monegasque then went on to win the next race in Monaco, closing the gap in the Constructors' Championship to Red Bull down to 24 points.
Coming into Canada, Ferrari felt confident. However, after the ninth round of the season in Montreal, their expectations might have been reset. For a while, it seemed like they had a real shot in the Constructors' Championship.
But after the Italian team's performance at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, the gap to Red Bull went up to 58 points, and it looks like they haven't really caught the Austrian team yet in terms of performance. Leclerc told the media after the Canadian Grand Prix, as per RacingNews365:
"There are a lot of little details, added up together, that make a difference, and just a new package with a bit more downforce and a bit less drag, it is completely obvious it won't be enough to close the gap."
"There are lots of little details that we need to put together, but if I had to pinpoint one [area to improve], it is in low-speed, long corners."
Low-speed corners, such as the first turn in China, create problems for Ferrari. Leclerc asserted his team has to optimize this to close the 2-tenth gap to Red Bull.
"We are speaking about maybe two-and-a-half tenths [deficit] in the worst scenarios, which is little when it is hundredths per corner."
"We've got to look at every single detail, and just by optimizing our package, you can already gain a tenth, which is half of that gap."
