Mercedes F1 driver Lewis Hamilton adds to his previous statements in relation to disqualification after the 2023 United States Grand Prix Sunday Race.
The disqualification of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc in Austin was a huge surprise to many Formula One fans. We have not seen the disqualification of a driver since Sebastian Vettel in 2021.
What outrages multiple Hamilton and Leclerc fans is that only four cars have been examined after the Grand Prix. This means other cars might also not meet the technical requirements, they just got away with it.
Drivers have been asked to comment on this situation during a Thursday press conference ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton said:
"Firstly, I’ve heard from several different sources that there were a lot of other cars that were also illegal. But they weren’t tested, so they got away with it."
While Hamilton didn't say he deserved the second place, the seven-time World Champion rather tried to suggest the results of the Grand Prix are based on luck if not everybody gets tested.
"I’ve been racing here 16 years, there’s been times where there’s been many other scenarios like this where some people got away with certain things, and some people have just been unlucky they got tested."
The problem with an examination of the cars after the race is there are too many things to look at and it is rather a lengthy process. The winner of a race is the one whose car gets examined most often. Hamilton added:
"So I think ultimately there probably needs to be some sort of better structure in terms of making sure it’s fair and even across the board."
The Mercedes driver explained the difference in the height of the floor would not influence results, in his opinion. Nevertheless, the speed of his Mercedes after upgrades in Austin looked promising.
"But anyways, we’re hopeful that the performance will continue this weekend. And yeah, just making sure that guys don’t overreact. I think we’ll be fine."
