Aston Martin F1 driver Lance Stroll described the extreme conditions drivers had to endure during the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix.
The 2023 Qatar Grand Prix will go down as one of the physically toughest races in recent few years. The severe, challenging conditions tested every single driver.
The combination of temperatures over 30 degrees Celsius (over 86 Fahrenheit) throughout the whole race with humidity over 70%, and the track nature (fast sweeping corners) made the race almost unbearable for not only Lance Stroll but multiple other drivers.
Lando Norris called the race toughest in his career, Logan Sargeant retired from the race, Valtteri Bottas compared the conditions to sauna and Pierre Gasly called it "probably one of the toughest" since he arrived in Formula One.
Lance Stroll seemed really disappointed from how the Grand Prix in his post-race interview where he said: "About P9 on the road, we got two points and then penalties... I don't even care. It was just so hard". Stroll then elaborated:
“"I mean the track limits, they painted the curbs, you can't see the track, you are so dizzy, it's dark, you're fading low blood pressure and just passing out in the car and they giving track limit penalties is kind of a joke. I was passing out in the car, it's tough, I'm sure it's tough for everyone."”
Stroll received 10 seconds of time penalties in total for impeding the track limits. Official FIA document detailed: "The car left the track on five (5) occasions without justifiable reason, after having received a 5-second time penalty on the fourth (4th) occasion."
However, the scenes Stroll describes are truly alarming for F1 organizers. Esteban Ocon urged F1 to move the race to some colder month, like December instead of October, after throwing up inside the car during the race. The Frenchman described the air he was getting inside the cockpit as "fire."
