Oscar Piastri set the fastest lap of the second free practice session, during which we've seen the least amount of running in a long time.
The 2024
Japanese Grand Prix is the first time that It Will take place so early in the Formula 1 schedule, and moving this race wasn't perhaps the best idea in terms of weather conditions.
Every single session of the weekend carried a risk of rain. It was raining at the end of
FP1 (which was won by
Max Verstappen), and it was raining even more heavily during the one-and-a-half hours between FP1 and FP2.
Consequently, the second Free Practice session started in damp conditions, and neither of the teams was keen on going out on track.
Apparently, one hour ahead of FP2, they just found out that the newest weather predictions suggest no rain on Sunday, which means there wouldn't be much reason to push their cars on the wet track.
In fact, F1 teams led the fans present at the
Suzuka Circuit to wait quite a while, as there was no car on the track until the 13th minute of the session when
Lewis Hamilton ventured out on the track in medium compound tires.
Hamilton was followed by a few other drivers on intermediate compound tires, but the track wasn't wet enough for these compounds. As a consequence, these tires would overheat too quickly, and drivers could only do one push lap on them.
At the same time, the track was a bit too wet for slick tires, which discouraged most of the teams from going on it.
Some went out at the end of the session only to try a practice start, but seven drivers didn't even sit in their cars throughout the whole session.
Logan Sargeant didn't take part in the session due to his crash in the first practice, which heavily damaged the floor, suspension, and gearbox. Luckily for him, he didn't miss too much running.
Oscar Piastri, Lewis Hamilton, and
Charles Leclerc went out in the last few minutes to set the three fastest times of the session.
