Hendrik Johannes Nicasius "Nyck" de Vries was born on February 6, 1995, to father Hendrik Jan de Vries and mother Naomi Hesseling. He was born in Uitwellingerga, Netherlands, and he represents the Netherlands in his racing career.
The Dutchman had a very interesting career, representing and driving for multiple teams. In 2010 and 2011, he won the Karting World Championship, beating another
Formula One driver,
Alexander Albon.
De Vries was part of
McLaren's Young Driver Programme, but only until 2019. He participated in three Formula 2 Championship seasons, finishing seventh in 2017, fourth in 2018, and eventually winning the 2019 Formula 2 Championship with ART Grand Prix.
However, a direct move to Formula One didn't follow after that. De Vries started driving in Formula E for the
Merecedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team, ending his spell in McLaren's Young Driver Programme.
The Dutch driver completed three seasons in Formula E, and in the 2020-21 season, he managed to win the driver's championship with 99 points. After that, De Vries' debut in Formula One followed, and it was a very interesting few months.
At the 2022
Spanish Grand Prix, he enjoyed an hour-long practice session in Alex Albon's Williams. Only a few months later, he jumped into
Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes to complete a practice session at the 2022 French Grand Prix, and he had a chance to drive in Mercedes once more in that season, this time replacing
George Russell at the 2022
Mexico City Grand Prix.
In the same season, De Vries had a very interesting experience at the 2022
Italian Grand Prix when he first replaced
Sebastian Vettel in
Aston Martin for the first practice session, but after Alex Albon suffered appendicitis, the Dutch driver replaced him in
Williams for the third practice, qualifying, and also the race, marking his official Formula One debut.
Also thanks to his dream debut, in which he finished ninth, De Vries got a seat in the 2023 Formula One World Championship team, joining
Yuki Tsunoda at AlphaTauri. However, the Dutch driver didn't complete the full season, as he was replaced by
Daniel Ricciardo after ten races, ending his short spell in the world of Formula 1.
