AlphaTauri driver Yuki Tsunoda reacted to scoring the team's best result for the whole season at the 2023 United States Grand Prix.
Starting from the eleventh place on the grid, Yuki Tsunoda managed to cross the line in P10, achieving a great result for AlphaTauri, which currently stands last in the Constructors' Championship.
The bumpy nature of the circuit seemed to have suited the Japanese driver, who congratulated his team in the interview after the race, as reported by Formula One:
"It was a good race for me, and I’m happy. To score points here three times in a row is amazing, especially in front of the Austin fans. A great job, and congratulations to the team."
The AlphaTauri driver benefited from the retirement of Fernando Alonso who was called in by his team on lap 51. What Tsunoda did not know when talking to the media was that he would move up two additional places.
"We got slightly lucky with Fernando (Alonso) in the end, but we maximized the performance because if we weren’t driving there, we wouldn’t have been able to benefit and score points."
After the disqualification of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, Tsunoda moved up into P8, scoring four valuable points for AlphaTauri, to which he added one more point for the fastest lap of the race.
"At first, I got a heart attack when the team called me in, to box, because I thought there was an issue, but they told me we were going for the fastest lap on the soft tire."
Scoring five points in total, Tsunoda achieved the season's best result for AlphaTauri and scored more points than all remaining AlphaTauri drivers combined throughout the whole season.
"It was my first experience going for the fastest lap in the final lap of the race, and I really enjoyed it, it was thrilling. Now, we’ll refocus and continue to carry this momentum into the final races of this season."
