Former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone recently shared his opinion on Mick Schumacher, who recently decided to join the WEC series driving for
Alpine.
Mick Schumacher showed great promise in the rookie series before joining Formula One as he won both Formula 3 and Formula 2.
However, when he arrived at Formula 1, he couldn't meet the great expectations associated with his last name, and no team wanted to give him a contract to race in the 2023 season.
Former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone thought it was Schumacher's mistake to go to the worst team on the grid and suggested he would be better understood elsewhere. As quoted by
gpblog.com, he said:
"He would have been better understood at Red Bull, for example, where he would have been helped and coached to the top."
It is very unsusual for Drivers who get out of Formula One to ever get a chance to return. However, we have three examples of such drivers on the 2023 grid -
Daniel Ricciardo,
Nico Hulkenberg, and
Kevin Magnussen. Ecclestone continued:
"He has to fight, he has to persevere and show that he is still capable of good performances. At best, people will then see him and say: we need him. And not the other way around: that he is looking for someone to hire him because of his name. He needs to forget his name and develop as a person."
Ecclestone approved of his move, suggesting there are not many better opportunities for the German driver to showcase his talent at the moment.
The former Formula One supremo concluded: "It is probably the only and best thing he can do at the moment."
