Carlos Sainz suggested that the seven-time world champion,
Lewis Hamilton, is not a better racing driver than him.
Lewis Hamilton will be leaving
Mercedes at the end of the 2024 season to replace Carlos Sainz in
Ferrari. The 29-year-old wasn't planning on leaving the Italian team, but this decision was made without him.
Now, the Spaniard is left searching for a different team, and going into the 14th round of the 2024 season, he still hasn't decided where he wants to go.
Speaking about how it felt to be replaced at Scuderia, Sainz suggested it isn't that bad when he considers that the most successful driver in F1 history is taking his place.
"When I think about it in those terms, it doesn't hurt me so much, because the person who is replacing me is one of the best drivers in the history of the sport."
While he acknowledged Hamilton as one of the best there ever was, the Spaniard went on to say that he believed the
39-year-old driver was not better than him and that multiple other drivers would say the same if asked the question.
"I honestly believe that Hamilton is not a better driver than me. If you ask this question to the 18 other drivers, they will answer the same."
This is a mentality that every single F1 driver needs to have, and they need to convince themselves and everyone else about it.
"I think I'm the best option for any Formula 1 team because if I didn't have this mentality, I wouldn't be a Formula 1 driver, and I wouldn't have the competitive soul that I have."
As it is, it seems the Spaniard is prolonging his decision to sign with one of the teams in the bottom five as he hopes for an opportunity in Mercedes, or perhaps even
Red Bull- should something come up.
