Red Bull Racing F1 team principal shared his opinion about the change to F1 rules ahead of the 2023
Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
After receiving complaints from multiple drivers like Max Verstappen following the
Mexico City Grand Prix, FIA decided to introduce a rule change for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix that they hoped would solve the situation.
The cars were allowed to wait at the end of the pit exit but had to stay as much to the left as possible to make it possible for the cars behind to pass them.
It turned out not to be the perfect solution as the drivers now waited at the end of the pit exit but were not as much to the left as possible. This results in numerous dangerous situations and penalties.
Three drivers have been penalized going into the race for impeding in the pit exit. Red Bull Racing team principal shared his opinion after the Sao Paulo Qualifying on Friday as he told the media:
"We're just making it too complicated. There was the rule for driving out of the garage, driving in the pit lane, driving out of the pit lane."
Horner suggests the rules are becoming too complicated at this point, and the rule-makers should focus on the root cause.
"You've got to go to basics: 'Why are the drivers needing to do these out laps or whatever?' and go to the root cause. Is it tyre pressure? Is it tyre temperature?"
Drivers want to wait at the end of the pit exit to create a perfect gap for themselves. Once they enter the track, they can warm up their tires and get on with the flying lap without having other drivers in their way. Horner added:
"It's something that didn't exist in F1 for 50 years, so why is it an issue now? For me, it's looking at the root cause rather than the sticky plasters that keep getting applied."
