Oscar Piastri shared that the McLaren team has the pace to beat Aston Martin in the fight for second place in the Constructors' Championship.
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is the last race of the 2023 season. While the Constructors' Championship title was decided a long time ago, battles for the second and fourth place are still on.
The second-place fight is between Mercedes and Ferrari, which are separated by a mere four points going into the race at Yas Marina Circuit.
Oscar Piastri is part of the battle for fourth place in the Championship, which is currently occupied by his team, McLaren, with an 11-point lead over Aston Martin.
Asont Martin's team principal, Mike Krack, said ahead of the race in Las Vegas that his team will never give up in the fight for fourth place.
After being asked whether he thinks his team can keep the lead over Aston Martin in the Championship, Oscar Piastri responded to the media in Abu Dhabi:
"Yes, I think we've got the pace to be able to beat them [Aston Martin]. If we go out and do what we're capable of and what the car's potential is, then we should be ok."
McLaren F1 drivers were not quite able to extract everything from their cars during the last race, which allowed Aston Martin to close the gap down to 11 points.
Lando Norris crashed his car on lap 3, which put him out of the race, and only a few laps later, Piastri collided with Lewis Hamilton, which set him back for the rest of the race in terms of strategy. The Australian concluded:
"But we still have to go out there and do our job and get the most out of what we've got. Hopefully, we can be quick, fighting well and truly at the front, and then the result will take care of itself."
