Liam Lawson shared what happened between Max Verstappen and George Russell at the 2024 drivers' dinner in Abu Dhabi.
Over the last three years, it has become a tradition for F1 drivers to meet in Abu Dhabi on the final Grand Prix weekend of each season for dinner.
This tradition began when Lewis Hamilton organized the dinner at the end of 2022 as a farewell to departing Sebastian Vettel. The drivers liked it so much that they decided to keep it going.
In 2024, there was one tense moment at dinner as Liam Lawson, Yuki Tsunoda, and all the other drivers decided to troll George Russell.
Following the race weekend in Qatar, the Mercedes driver clashed with Max Verstappen, and both talked smack about each other in the media.
While Verstappen said Russell is two-faced and that he lost all respect for the Mercedes driver, Russell said Verstappen thinks he's above the rules, is aggressive towards his team, thinks he can get away with murder, and someone needs to stand up to him.
So what happened between them at the driver's dinner? Speaking on the Pit Stop podcast, Verstappen's 2025 teammate Liam Lawson shared the story:
"It's crazy how many messages I've had about this [drivers dinner], people are really curious."
"This is f****** funny. It's really funny. We rock up, at this big table. As the table was filling up, that side of the table was pretty much full."
"And opposite me was Max and then three chairs to the left [of him]. George hadn't turned up at this point."
"We all said, 'We're going to save the spot for George right next to Max.' George arrives, and Max said 'Mate, we've saved a seat for you.'"
"And George just picks up the chair and walks to the other end of the table, and sits with Lewis at that end of the table. We thought it would be funny. It wasn't funny… it was funny for us!"
