Martin Brundle suggested Lewis Hamilton might be past his absolute peak once he turns 40 in January 2025.
2024 has been a rollercoaster year for the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, both in terms of emotions and results, which have been up and down from race to race.
A lot was going on, and although he struggled with qualifying performance, Hamilton had shown he still had what it took with incredible drives at Spa, Silverstone, Las Vegas, or his final race in Abu Dhabi.
While his final Grand Prix weekend with the German team was hindered by a very unfortunate qualifying incident, Lewis Hamilton showed an incredible performance on Sunday, going from P16 to P4. Martin Brundle told Sky Sports after the race in Abu Dhabi:
"Tremendous drive [in Abu Dhabi], a bit like Las Vegas as well, wasn't it, where he came back through the field and just showed a lot of pace, a lot of determination."
Although it was an amazing drive, the former F1 driver and Sky Sports commentator suggested the seven-time world champion is probably past his prime.
"Plenty of people [are saying], 'Is Lewis over the hill?' Is his peak ahead of him or behind him? His absolute peak, it might be behind him as he turns 40 in January."
At the time of publishing this article, it is January 6th, and the Ferrari driver turns 40 tomorrow, January 7th. Lewis Hamilton will become the oldest driver Ferrari had in a long time.
On the one hand, Martin Brundle doesn't think the 40-year-old will be at his 100%. On the other hand, the former F1 driver warned that even Hamilton's 98% will be enough to win races with Ferrari.
"But, 98 percent of Lewis Hamilton in a race-winning Ferrari will win races and maybe, you know, he'll get some new energy there as well."
"So he showed today that there's still a lot to come from Lewis Hamilton at the wheel of a Formula 1 car."
